The term ‘Gaeltacht’ is used to denote those areas in Ireland where the Irish language is, or was until the recent past, the main spoken language of a substantial number of the local population.
The Galway Gaeltacht covers extensive parts of County Galway mainly in the west of the County, and is the single largest and most populous Gaeltacht area in the country.
The largest settlement areas are An Spidéal and An Cheathrú Rua. An Spidéal is located 40 km from Peacockes and An Cheathrú Rua is located 25 km from Peacockes.
Irish Summer Colleges are run every summer mainly for secondary school students.
The aim is to teach the Irish language to young people in an enjoyable and active way.
Students usually attend class every morning from Monday to Saturday with qualified teachers.
The curriculum is highly interactive, with emphasis on oral language and student participation.
A broad range of activities take place in the afternoon e.g. art, craft, sport, music, drama, dance and much more.
Evening activities include céilithe (involves dancing and playing Irish music) themed nights and inter-house competitions.
